Labor Day, as celebrated in many countries, originated in Canada and first appeared as the result of a trade union demonstration. In 1872 a Toronto printer’s union organized a demonstration to press for a 58-hour work week. The parade received considerable attention across Canada and was followed by similar demonstrations in other cities through 1873. In 1890, the Knights of Labor planned a large demonstration on behalf of workers’ rights to be held in New York City on September 5th. Local leaders, however, decided it would be more effective to hold it on September 5th if they had the support of local unions and government officials. They also wanted an event that would celebrate workers’ contributions to society. Finally, they chose that date because it did not honor any particular labor leader or martyr.

That same year Colorado became the first state to pass legislation defining Labor Day as an annual legal holiday. Oregon then passed a law making Labor Day a holiday for state employees only. By 1893, 23

Two years later, on June 28th, 1884, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. On June 29th, 1894 Congress passed another law making Labor Day a legal holiday in all states also.
