The emergence of ambient music has been described as “the last great development in the history of recorded sound” and the style has spanned from the earliest experiments in electronic musique concrete to the present day. It has been described as “music to be listened to and not danced to”, with its most popular practitioners including Brian Eno and Aphex Twin.

Ambient music uses a range of electronic musical instruments such as synthesizers and digital audio workstations and combines them with elements of styles such as new age, avant-garde, dream pop and drone. It eschews the normal song structure found in pop and rock music in favor of repetitive motifs or long droning sounds, often layered with samples from other sources (field recordings, television broadcasts), creating soundscapes which are often quite psychedelic.

Electronic Ambient music emerged in the late 20th century as a different form of ambient music with an emphasis on sound textures created by technology rather than the nature-inspired sounds of the original ambient music. It may use synthesizers, sequencers, or acoustic instrumentation but is mostly computer-generated using modern digital software.

In general now, electronic music refers to any kind of music that uses electronic musical instruments or electronic music technology as part of its composition or performance. Electronic musical instruments have been used in popular music since the 1970s.

Electronic musical instruments include analog synthesizers, digital synthesizers, and theremins. Digital synthesizers use methods such as additive synthesis, subtractive synthesis, FM synthesis, phase distortion synthesis and vector synthesis to generate electronic sounds. Modern forms of electronic music include house music, techno and bassline (music genre).

Ambient music is a genre of music that heavily emphasizes tone and atmosphere over traditional musical structure or rhythm. The mood created by this type of music is generally serene, calm, or contemplative. Ambient music is intended to induce a sense of calmness and relaxation in the listener. Ambient music is often listened to with headphones, thus allowing complete focus on the main elements of the music.

Ambient music has been used as background music in many settings, such as in retail stores, hotels, restaurants, bars, airports and health spas. It can also be used for massage therapy and for various forms of meditation. Therapists who use ambient music claim that it relaxes muscles and helps patients release tension from their bodies more easily.

The genre is said to evoke an “atmospheric”, “visual”, or “unobtrusive” quality. Ambient music focuses on creating a mood or atmosphere through synthesizers and timbral qualities lacking the presence of any net composition, beat, or structured melody. It uses textural layers of sound which can reward both passive and active listening and encourage a sense of hypnotism.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, new forms of electronic music from Europe began to make an impact on popular music. Artists like Jean-Jacques Perrey and Pierre Henry were experimenting with ways to create a new form of pop/rock music using tape loops, musique concrète, and other experimental techniques. Combining these techniques with elements of jazz and rock, artists like Perrey and Henry played a role in creating the ambient soundscapes that would become so popular in later decades.

The term ambient music was first used by British artist Brian Eno in the late 1970s to describe his own compositions as well as other artists’ work that he felt shared similar musical characteristics: “Ambient Music must be able to accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting.”

Music is an art that has existed for centuries. It originally began as a way to entertain and convey emotion through song. While this is still true today, music has become more than just entertainment. With the rise of modern music, such as various types of electronic dance music (EDM), new genres of music have come into existence. The genre that I will be discussing in this article is ambient electronic music. A genre that many people do not know about, but one that I believe more people should listen to.

There are many types of ambient electronic music and it can be difficult to define due to the wide spectrum of sounds and feelings it can produce. Many artists consider ambient music “aural wallpaper” because it is played at such a low volume that many people do not even realize it is being played.

In the 1960s, the British musician Brian Eno, who was a member of the rock band Roxy Music, became interested in creating music that was intended to aid relaxation and healing. His first experiments with this genre were focused on creating “music for airports.”

To create his first ambient work, entitled Discreet Music (1975), Eno used a series of tape loops and a synthesizer. He would later explain that his original intention for this style of music was to have it act as a sort of sonic background that could enhance other activities.

Thus, Eno originally referred to his style of music as “ambient,” because he felt that this type of music could be placed in the background without inhibiting listeners ability to engage in other activities.

Eno’s experiments with ambient music led him to develop a new style of music which he described as “generative” because it was constantly changing depending on chance and probability factors. In contrast to most popular music, where melodies are repeated several times throughout a piece, Eno’s generative works are constantly shifting. Eno also released several albums that were based on this idea, including Music for Airports (1978), Thursday Afternoon (1985), and Nerve Net (1992).
