It’s a common question, especially for people new to the scene. A lot of people who are really into electronic music are also really into sound design. I know this because when I ask them what they think about electronic music, their answer is usually something like, “I love it! The bass is so heavy!”

This is not a bad thing, because it means they are passionate about the subject. But they are also missing out on a lot of things that make sound design great. Sound design is not just about making cool sounds; it’s about how those sounds interact with each other and how you can use them to tell a story or convey an emotion.

For example, if you were trying to create a song that had an eerie feeling, you might want to use reverb and delay on your synth sounds to make them sound spooky. Or if you wanted something really smooth and mellow, using analog synths would give you those qualities.

They specialize in creating sound effects and sounds for movies, television shows or other types of productions. They use their knowledge of acoustics and electronics to create the desired sound effect for a production piece.

So what’s the difference between electronic music and sound design? Sound design is the process behind the creation of electronic music. Sound design is essentially the art of making sounds from scratch in a digital format that can then be used to create a piece of music. Since most electronic music uses synthesizers and samplers as its main instrumentation it can be said that most electronic music producers are also sound designers because they create their own unique sounds to use

Before we go any further, let’s define what I mean by electronic music and sound design. If you have ever seen or heard a movie or video game trailer that has bombastic music in the background, it’s probably an example of sound design. If you’ve listened to a recent pop song, it’s probably an example of electronic music.

These two concepts are often confused with one another, so I’ll do my best to illustrate the differences between them.

What is Sound Design?

Sound design is a creative process that uses audio effects to augment the sounds produced by instruments or vocals. Typically the finished product is something that sounds larger than life and often sounds like more than one instrument playing at once. It’s often used in trailers for movies and video games to produce impactful sounds that would be hard to reproduce on stage.
