A few days ago I was looking through a thread on the Native Instruments forum where people were discussing the best method for creating electronic music. When it comes to electronic music, there are generally two schools of thought:
The first school – the “traditional” way – is to use a keyboard or guitar and some sort of instrument that you can strum or beat (e.g. drums). The second school – the “digital” way – is to use an instrument that produces digital sounds (e.g. synthesizers).

When I started producing, I was very much a “sound guy” and not a “music guy.” My understanding of music theory was very limited and I found it difficult to communicate with my musical collaborators about what I was trying to achieve sonically. Over the years, I have developed a few different strategies that have helped me to better communicate with other musicians and engineers when working in the studio. The use of algorithms has become an integral part of modern music production technology. The major benefit of using an algorithm is that you can save time by programming all of the parameters of your synth or plugin in one go. However, there is a downside as well: since you are relying on an algorithm rather than your own musical intuition, it can be difficult to communicate what changes need to be made if something isn’t sounding right (or good enough). This can lead to frustration between collaborators and make it seem like you’re wasting time trying out different ideas without getting anywhere. It also means you won’t be able to take advantage of unique opportunities for creativity that arise when working together on projects.

In this article, I’ll cover the basics of what synthesis is and how you can use it in your own projects.
Synthesis is a technique used in music production where you combine multiple sounds together to create new sounds. The most common way this is done is by taking a sample from one sound and then playing it back at a slower speed, which creates what we call “attack/release” sounds. This is just one example of how synthesis works. There are many different types of synthesis techniques, but they all involve manipulating audio signals in some way.
