There is a huge number of different types of electronic music out there, but all of them have at least one thing in common: they are made with sound synthesis.

Synthesizers create sound electronically, and can be either analog or digital (or a combination of both). When you synthesize a sound you are able to directly control every aspect of it. You can set its pitch, timbre, loudness and envelope, so it is one of the most powerful and flexible ways to create sound.

Most modern synthesizers allow you to do this by connecting the source of the sound (e.g. an oscillator) to a filter and an amplifier, then shaping the sound using envelopes and modulators. Just like this…
