Since then, ambient music has come a long way from the early days of Eno’s Ambient 1: Music For Airports. Ambient music is now a broad and varied genre with many different sub-genres. It seems that no matter what style of music you like, there is an ambient equivalent.
One of the most recent sub-genres to be emerging is the style of electronic music sometimes referred to as “intelligent dance music” or IDM. This kind of electronic music is characterized by a slower tempo (usually between 70 and 90 beats per minute) than other styles such as techno, house or trance (120 – 140 bpm). This slower tempo allows for greater variation in rhythm, more complex drum patterns and also gives producers more time to play with various sounds and effects. Also this style features synthesizers and samples that are not usually heard outside of IDM tracks.

In this article I’m using the term Ambient Electronic to refer to a newer style of electronic music. Often it has a 4/4 beat with a slower tempo between 90 and 110 bpm, but it’s not always danceable. The most common elements are lush pads or textures, highly modulated sounds like vocal chops or other effects, sometimes with a prominent melody line. A lot of times there are also field recordings, drum loops, and chopped up percussion sounds.
I’ve found that when people talk about AE they’re often referring to something very specific: music that is less melodic than progressive house and more melodic than IDM. It’s typically more minimalistic than chillout and more textured than ambient music. The best way to describe it is somewhere between the two genres: it has the feel of ambient music but with more rhythmic elements that give it momentum.
