Minimal house is a sub-genre of house music and minimal techno. It is characterized by stripped-down, repetitive arrangements, with a tempo of 120 to 130 beats per minute. The minimal house sound is first identified in Germany in the early 1990s by producers such as Robert Hood, Daniel Bell, and others at the former underground club “UFO”, which was located in Berlin.

In 1993, labels such as Mille Plateaux started issuing minimal techno compilations, with tracks consisting of very few elements with long decay times and few changes. Minimal techno was originally developed in the early 1990s by Detroit-based producers Robert Hood and Daniel Bell. By the end of the decade the term “minimal” usually referred to a style of techno that was popularised in Germany by labels such as Kompakt (founded 1998), Perlon (founded 1998), Klang Elektronik (founded 1995), and Playhouse (founded 1996).

Minimal house music is often constructed from licks or short riffs that are repeated several times before being replaced by something new.

Minimal electronic music is characterized by the “minimal” use of musical materials. It depends on the repetition of short phrases played by rhythmic instruments, generally with an accent on the first beat of each group. These phrases are combined and overlapped in order to create texture and forward motion. Minimal music is distinguished from rock-oriented styles by its slow rate of harmonic change, which allows for tonal and textural repetition. In comparison with house dance music, minimal music has more emphasis on rhythm.

Minimal music went on to influence many other genres of dance music including house, techno and trance. Minimal techno is a style that was developed in the early 1990s by Detroit-area producers Robert Hood, Kenny Larkin and Daniel Bell, who drew inspiration from Derrick May’s “futuristic” compositions such as “Strings of Life”. By the late 1990s, Detroit’s minimal aesthetic had also been adopted in Europe as the sound of labels like Kompakt and Perlon.
