The best electronic music album of the year? Mos Def, hands down. The Ecstatic (Downtown/Universal) is one of those rare albums that makes you feel like you’re listening to the future, while simultaneously reorienting you to the past.

The Ecstatic isn’t the first hip-hop album to borrow from non-hip-hop influences: think Outkast’s Love Below or Kanye West’s Graduation. But it is one of the first to credibly integrate a range of disparate sounds and styles into its soundscape. Which isn’t to say that it’s all over the place; if anything, its aesthetic is more coherent than any of Mos Def’s previous efforts. But it’s a lot more diverse.

In an age when electronic dance music (EDM) is defined by its lack of diversity, Mos Def’s latest stands out for how it defies categorization. It may not be perfect, but it’s a welcome reminder that hip-hop doesn’t have to fit into any one mold.
