2. Halloween (1978) – Halloween is another classic horror movie from the 1970’s. The soundtrack for this film was composed by John Carpenter, who also directed the film itself! The music itself was very minimalistic; consisting mainly of synthesizer tones with occasional piano notes or drum beats added for emphasis at times of high tension within scenes from which it accompanies**
As an interesting side note, the soundtrack was recorded in 5.1 stereo on the same sound stage where The Exorcist was recorded.
The Shining
The Stanley Kubrick film is set to a haunting orchestral score written by composer Wendy Carlos. The soundtrack was originally supposed to be a classical music score. However, after seeing the film and feeling it needed an orchestral score that would be more modern and unique, Kubrick decided he wanted something more out of the ordinary.
Carlos came up with a hauntingly beautiful electronic score that is still being used in scary movies today. While the movie can still strike fear into viewers without the soundtrack, it certainly wouldn’t have been as effective without the music to enhance it.
