Wendy Carlos is an American composer and keyboardist who worked extensively with synthesizers and was one of the first to popularize them in the late 1960s. Carlos’ synthesizer work includes “Switched on Bach”, “By Request”, “Switched-On Brandenburgs”, and “The Well Tempered Synthesizer.” She is also known for her film scores, including “A Clockwork Orange” and “The Shining”.
2. Robert Moog (1934-2005)
Robert Arthur Moog, founder of Moog Music, pioneered the analog synthesizer and popularized it in both the popular and academic music communities. His innovations have been employed by numerous musicians from several genres, including jazz, classical, rock, and electronic. His inventions have had a profound impact on modern music.
3. Raymond Scott (1908–1994)

Top 10 Electronic Music Pioneers of The 20th Century
1. Pierre Henry (b. 1927)
Pierre Henry is the first on our list, and he was one of the first to experiment with electronic music. He was born in Paris and began his career in 1949. His first piece, Symphonie pour un Homme Seul (Symphony for a Man Alone), was created by him in collaboration with Pierre Schaeffer in 1950. In 1958, Henry worked with choreographer Maurice Bejart for Le Ballet des Mousquetaires, which made use of musique concrète techniques and tape loops.
He worked together with Michel Colombier from 1960 to 1970. They created electronic music that had been used in films like William Klein’s Mr Freedom and Barbet Schroeder’s More. In 1970, he released Messe Pour le Temps Présent, which became one of his most popular works. He has composed several other film scores as well as music for theaters and ballets throughout his career.
Some of the greatest musical pioneers throughout history were not afraid to experiment with new technology and sounds. In the early 20th century, the possibilities of what could be created with electricity were just beginning to be explored. Musicians who were willing to tinker with electronics were able to create some of the most beautiful and otherworldly sounds ever heard.

1. Ray Kurzweil – Kurzweil Music Systems is one of the most important companies in music synthesizer history. It was founded by Ray Kurzweil in 1982, and introduced a wide range of innovative products during its lifetime, including the K250 (called “The Thinking Man’s Synthesizer”) and its famous sequencer keyboards, which ran on DOS software. Although KMS went out of business in 1990, Ray Kurzweil went on to found Kurzweil Applied Intelligence in 1993, which developed optical character recognition technology and was acquired by Xerox in 1999. He currently serves as Director of Engineering at Google.
