Electronic music has been around in the Middle East and North Africa for more than three decades, but it wasn’t until 2011 that it began to cross over into mainstream Western consciousness. That year “El Haqiqa (The Truth),” by Algerian electronic producer Sofiane Saidi and his band Mazalda, was featured in Ken Loach’s film Route Irish.

Since then, artists from Morocco to Turkey have begun to reach audiences outside the Middle East through social media platforms such as Bandcamp and SoundCloud. A growing number of these artists are female and gay, at a time when women’s rights and LGBT issues are still controversial topics in much of the region.

These 10 producers, many of whom perform live as part of ensembles ranging from duos to full orchestras, are among those leading the way for this exciting new genre.
