The alternative electronic music record label that signed your favorite artists is now on sale: a blog about an indie record label.

This is it. We are selling the entire business. The entire catalog, the entire brand, the entire domain and all rights to the name. This is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to start or run a record label.

We have been around for over 13 years and have sold literally hundreds of thousands of songs. We have run almost 100 releases (many of them full-length albums) and we have helped hundreds of artists get their start in music. We are one of the longest running independent electronic labels in existence today and we are organizing this sale so that we can focus on other things we want to do with our lives (such as creating more music).

After 17 years of operation, the alternative electronic music record label that signed your favorite artists is now on sale: a blog about an indie record label.

“If you have any interest in buying it, please don’t hesitate to contact me,” founder James Medway wrote on Twitter. “I’ll be happy to discuss it with you.”

The label’s website states that it will remain open for business and plans to “continue to release music that we feel is important and is representative of the independent spirit of our label.”

Medway’s tweet was met with responses from many fans who expressed their love for the label and its music.

“Your work has been a big part of my life,” user @ nikkinikkinikki wrote. “I’m forever grateful to you!”

Others have already expressed their interest in purchasing the label, including one user who asked Medway if he’d like to join him for lunch.

In the mid-1990s I was living in San Francisco, working as an engineer at a software startup. In my spare time I liked to go to shows at places like the Bottom of the Hill and the Great American Music Hall.

At that time San Francisco had a vibrant underground scene of independent bands playing original music. Record labels like Matador and Touch & Go had made their names by signing bands like Pavement and Guided By Voices, and were now making waves with more recent signings like Sleater-Kinney and Modest Mouse. But MCA bought Geffen, which bought DGC, which bought Interscope, which bought Island, which bought Def Jam, so there were fewer and fewer independent labels left to sign these bands.

With nowhere else to go, the indie labels started signing electronic music. And they signed it not just because they needed something to fill out their catalogs–they really loved it. They would go see bands like Mouse on Mars or Tortoise play 2 or 3 nights in a row at clubs like the Knitting Factory in New York City or Lounge Ax in Chicago.

Welcome to the newly relaunched Vex Records. The original Vex Records was an independent techno, electronica and experimental music record label founded in 1993. This site is dedicated to preserving the history of that label and creating a central resource for all things Vex.

This site will also be home for the new Vex Records label which will continue to release exciting experimental electronic music from around the world.

Keep checking back as we get this label up and running again!
