As the name implies, one of the defining features of this music genre is its reliance on technology to create its sound. It was a way for musicians to use new technology to make sounds that were not possible before this time.

This music style also relied heavily on chance as part of its composition process. This could be in the form of improvisation, or it could be through allowing parts of the composition to happen by chance.

These elements have developed into what is now classified as post-minimalism. There are many sub-genres within this single umbrella term and they are all incredibly diverse in terms of both style and instrumentation.

Electronic and chance music is a class of music that employs electronic musical instruments, digital instruments and circuitry-based music technology. It includes both purely electronic musical styles (electroacoustic music), as well as styles where electronic sounds are combined with acoustic sounds.

Electronic and chance music arose from the various technological developments of the 20th century, including the invention of electromechanical instruments such as the Telharmonium, Theremin, Hammond organ, and the many innovations in computer technology.

The first generation of electronic instruments was developed at the end of World War I, when composers began experimenting with new technologies in the development of an art music that would be divorced from traditional instruments and performance practices. These compositions were collectively labelled ‘electroacoustic music’. This term has also been used to describe computer-generated music composed without any human intervention.

Erik Satie was probably one of the earliest composers to use electronic instruments in his compositions. He later wrote “I dreamed last night that I had invented a very useful machine which produces ideas similar to those one invents when awake.”
