Music has always been a significant part of Gavin Brown’s life. It started with his uncle’s Soundsystem, which introduced him to reggae and dancehall in his childhood. By the time he was 14, he had discovered house and acid house through a rave in Clapham Common. His tastes, however, are diverse, and he is constantly listening to new and emerging music. Early Days of Clubbing
Gavin’s first experience of clubbing was at a club in north London in the 1990s, where he met Chris McCoy, a well-known black DJ at the time. He was introduced to the Off the Hook night at Velvet Rooms, which led to him meeting other DJs who would later play at Groove Aspect. Gavin also hosted and DJ’d at various clubs, including Heaven’s Fruit Machine and Hidden in Vauxhall.
- Gavin was dancing at a club in north London in the 90s where he met Chris McCoy, one of the leading black DJs on the London scene.
- Gavin hosted with Jeffrey Hinton at Heaven’s Fruit Machine on a Wednesday night back in the day.
- Gavin DJ’d for Patrick Lilly’s Work at Hidden in Vauxhall.
Gavin’s experience in the clubbing scene has had a lasting impact on his career as a promoter. He met DJ NG in 2009, and they joined forces to promote and play for the Factory After Party in Vauxhall. The party continued until the pandemic put an end to the hospitality sector. Since then, NG and Gavin have built their own sound system, Vaux Sounds, which they have taken out onto London’s skating scene with huge success. The Inspiration Behind Groove Aspect
Gavin’s love for music and his passion for creating a community vibe have inspired the creation of Groove Aspect. The new club aims to recreate the atmosphere of Factory, which was a hub for the LGBTQI+ community, while also catering to the older LGBTQI ravers. The event features two rooms, one dedicated to RnB and Reggae, and the other to house and rare groove.
| Room | Music Genre |
|---|---|
| RnB and Reggae | Underground sounds and self-expression |
| House and Rare Groove | A wide range of genres, from Disco to Deep, Soulful, Tribal House, and Amapiano |
Groove Aspect is not just about music; it’s also about sound design. Gavin is passionate about creating a warm and deep sound that is often lacking in modern clubs. He believes that music doesn’t have to be loud to be good and is working to create a soundsystem that prioritizes quality over volume. A Community-Oriented Event
Groove Aspect aims to bring people together, regardless of age, background, or orientation. The event features a diverse lineup of DJs, including Biggy C, Kaspa, John Freeman, and Tyrone, among others. The party is designed to be an inclusive and welcoming space, where everyone can express themselves freely.
“Groove Aspect is an LGBTQI+ club night devoted to underground sounds and self-expression. We want to recreate the family vibe we had at Factory and also cater for the older LGBTQI ravers, which seems to be lacking on the scene.”
Gavin’s vision for Groove Aspect is to create a space where people can come together and celebrate their love of music and self-expression. The event promises to be an unforgettable experience, with a unique blend of music and a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Upcoming Events
Aside from Groove Aspect, Gavin is also involved in the Brixton Mini Fest, a small festival celebrating the LGBTQI community in south London and beyond.
