When I was a kid, there were very few people listening to music in the gym. The only ones that did were usually wearing Sony Walkmans. And even then it was rare to see someone wearing headphones because they got tangled up on everything!
Fast forward to today and it seems like every second person at my gym is wearing headphones. By now everybody has an MP3 player or smart phone, so that’s probably why listening to music has become so popular in the gym. But I think another reason why it’s become so popular is because there are now many studies demonstrating that listening to music while exercising can help improve your workout in many ways.

In fact, research from Brunel University showed an increase of 15% in endurance when listening to upbeat music compared to listening to no music at all. The study also found that participants who listened to fast-paced music ran faster than those who listened to slow ballads.
But how does music accomplish this? Researchers at Oxford University found that the brain responds positively to certain types of sounds and tempos that in turn stimulate our brains to release dopamine (a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure). In turn, our bodies respond with “pleasure hormones,” which make us feel good. This leads to increased energy expenditure and motivation.

People always think they need to motivate themselves to work out. I personally think that is the wrong way to approach it. I think the key is not motivating yourself, but demotivating yourself from doing other things.
If you have a lot of options for entertainment, you will probably do one of them instead of working out. If you are like me, you will end up staring at twitter or reddit instead of working out. You need to limit those other options.
One way to do this is to make it hard to do anything else by putting your phone in another room and closing all the browser windows on your computer. But an easier way is to put on some music that isn’t good for doing anything besides working out and then getting started with your workout.
Another benefit is that music can help you enjoy the workouts more, which in turn makes it more likely that you will stick with them. People like different kinds of music, so experiment and find something that you like listening to while exercising!
