Live electronic music is a great way to get people dancing. But it’s not enough to just show up with tunes – you’ve got to know the crowd and the room, and how to set the right vibe.
I’m Tom, and I run Turn Down for What? How to Ensure Your Party Goes Off. I’ve been a DJ for over 15 years, and in that time I’ve played some of the wildest parties you can imagine, from raves in abandoned warehouses in Detroit to Ibiza-style club nights in London. Here I’ll share some of my top tips for how you can set up and DJ your own live electronic music event.
Soundcheck
As soon as you arrive at the venue, check out the sound system. You want a clear mid-range, with a tight bass response and crisp highs. If it’s not quite right, tell the soundguy what to tweak. He’ll appreciate you knowing what’s needed!
Mixing
For your first tune, blend into it gradually: bring it in low and then raise the volume so people don’t notice when you actually play it.
Parties are a great way to socialize and make new friends, but sometimes it can be tough to get them going. People can be shy! And that’s where we come in with our Live Electronic Music service.
We’ll set up a DJ booth, complete with spinning lights and smoke machine, at your party and provide one of our professional DJs for the night. They’ll play all your favorite dance hits and throw in some of their own favorites for good measure. We guarantee you won’t want the night to end!
So, turn down for what? Turn down because your party was so awesome everyone is still talking about it!

When I throw parties, my mission is to make the music sound as good as possible. The number one rule of DJing is never stop the music. If you’re playing digital files, and something screws up with your computer or software, don’t just sit there like an idiot while your guests are staring at you wondering why they can’t dance anymore.
If you’re using a Mac, hit the “Q” key and your iTunes app will instantly open. You’ll have backup music going while you switch over to your DJ software so that the music never stops. If all else fails, start playing CDs instead!
Also, try not to play too long of an intro for a song. I usually only play about 10-15 seconds of an intro before I move onto the next song. I’ve noticed that most DJs play WAY too much of an intro before getting into a song.
If you’re reading this, it’s likely that you are looking to throw a party! Finding the right music is key to
ensuring that your party is as lit as possible. You have many options for your musical selection, I will
discuss these below.
With live electronic music, the artist has a good deal of flexibility in what they can play and how long
they can play for. This makes it an excellent choice for parties with a large number of guests or where
guests will be arriving at different times.
A disadvantage of having live electronic music is that you never know exactly what you are going to get. If
you have specific songs or kinds of songs in mind, it may be hard to get the artist to play them unless they
are very flexible and accommodating.
When you’re throwing a party, the last thing you want is for people to be bored. To do this, you need to make sure the guests are entertained. Nothing does that better than great music!
The problem with having a DJ is that it can get expensive. If your budget doesn’t allow for that, what do you do? You could always use an iPod, but it’s not as fun as having a live performer. If only there was some way to have live electronic music at your party…
Well there is! I’m going to teach how to build a simple synth and use it to perform live music at your party using Ableton Live.
A birthday party should be a momentous occasion for the guest of honor, and a memorable experience for all of your guests. From the invitations to the thank-you notes, everything should reflect the excitement of your event. There are some things you should consider when planning your party:
1. How many people do you want to invite?
2. How much money do you have to spend?
3. What kind of activities will appeal to your crowd?
4. Where will you host the party?
5. What time of day do you want to hold it?
6. How formal or casual do you want it to be?
7. Who is doing all this work?
