Ever wanted to start making your own music but didn’t know where to begin? There’s so much information out there that it’s hard to know where to start…or maybe you just don’t have the time. Here is a step by step guide of how I learned, made my first song, and put it out into the world.

1. Listen to a lot of music.

I mean a lot. Listen everywhere you go, all the time. Pay attention to what makes you feel something and what doesn’t. Ask yourself why certain songs hit you hard and why others don’t. I can’t emphasize this enough. The more you listen, the better you will get at isolating what really gets your blood boiling about certain genres and producers/artists in those genres. Some people find this tedious, but it is simply an essential part of learning about music; not just how it is made but how it feels for people listening to it.

I am very happy to hear that you want to join the community of music makers! You are joining a group of people who have existed since the beginning of human culture. Music is an essential part of our culture, and it is a part of us as human beings. It is a great addition to our lives, and I am glad you have chosen to add it to yours.

Now you will need the necessary gear, but there are so many different types and varieties that this can be overwhelming. Also, there are certain pieces of gear that you can do without if you don’t want to spend too much cash. In this blog I’ll give you a step by step on how to start making music without spending too much money (with links to products direct from Amazon), as well as some tips and tricks for getting started as quickly and easily as possible.

Creating music is something that has been embedded in our DNA since the beginning of time. But with the advent of modern technology and social media, it is now easier than ever to get your music out there. I have been making music for 3 years now and I would like to share with you some of my tips on how to start making music.

To make this as easy as possible, I am going to go over a step by step process of how you can make your first song:

Writing the Song

This is usually the hardest part for people who are just starting out. You don’t have to be a good singer or musician; you just need a good idea. If you don’t have any ideas, start listening to different types of music and find something that really speaks to you. This is what will inspire your first song. Once you find that inspiration, write down everything that comes into your head about it on paper (or digitally if you prefer).

Write down your feelings, thoughts and emotions so that they can be captured in the music later on. This will also help you start brainstorming for other songs in the future!

Before we get started, there are a few quick notes I would like to go over with you.

First, you need a computer. This is absolutely essential to making electronic music (unless you’re in an experimental phase where you’re learning the basics of synthesis by plugging wires into a synthesizer and trying to control voltage). My personal recommendation is to use a Mac, but really any computer should work. If you’re using a PC, I’d recommend Windows 7.

Second, be patient. It takes time and effort to learn how to make music. You’re not going to be able to download Ableton and make good music the first day. It takes time, which is why I’ve created this blog for you – so that I can help guide you through the process and help shorten the amount of time it’ll take for you to become a great producer!

Third, make sure your computer has enough RAM. Electronic music can be very processor intensive, especially when working with multiple plugins. If you have less than 8GB of RAM on your computer then it’ll probably end up crashing often while trying to make music (which will not be fun!). That’s why I highly recommend at least 16GB or higher if possible 🙂

As an electronic music producer, you may have come to a point where you are sick of having to scour the internet in search of every single plugin, sample pack, and preset library that you want. You may just want to start making music already! That’s OK; I’ve been there too.
