The festival scene has always been big in America, but since 2010 it has taken a huge leap forward, with several festivals taking place each weekend during the summer months.
Electronic music is all about the DJ’s, producer’s, live performances, and festivals. Especially the festivals that occur all across the world. The main electronic music events and festivals happen in Europe where this type of music began. Even though there are many popular festivals in Europe, the biggest is definitely Tomorrowland. The festival has been held in Belgium since 2005 and holds over 400,000 people every year with another 1 million people attempting to get tickets.
Also, a recent and very popular festival is Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) which holds an audience of over 400,000 people per event. EDC was founded by Insomniac Events and has become the most popular electronic music festival in North America. EDC is held in Las Vegas and has recently expanded to other cities such as New York City, Orlando, Puerto Rico, London and Mexico City.
Although these events are some of the most popular in the world, there are also smaller ones that occur across the U.S., Canada and Mexico throughout the year that are just as fun but less crowded than EDC or Tomorrowland. Electronic music is often used for dancing at nightclubs, raves and festivals. It is also used in film soundtracks, video games and television shows. Many famous musicians have used electronic music instruments to record songs. People who make electronic music are called producers or DJs. Electronic musicians may use a computer program like Logic Pro or Ableton Live to make their music. They may also use an instrument called a synthesizer or sampler to create sounds they like, then mix those sounds together to make a song.
It is with great pleasure that we invite you to attend the International Electronic Music Festival in Vancouver for the first time. The festival will take place from Thursday, July 5th to Sunday, July 8th and consist of two sets of events.
On Friday, July 6th, the symposium will focus on how new developments in the field of electronic music are shaping our understanding of this emerging genre. Topics will include:
– Trends in electronic music (e.g., new genres, artists)
– How electronic music has changed over time
– How electronic music can be used to communicate
– How electronic music can be used as a tool for learning and education
On Saturday, July 7th, we will explore the impact that technology has had on electronic music and how it has shaped our understanding of it. Topics will include:
– How technology has influenced the creation of new genres/styles in electronic music
– What new genres/styles have emerged because of technological advancements?
– How technology has influenced how we listen to and experience electronic music (i.e., through different mediums such as concerts or online platforms like YouTube)
Electronic music is a broad range of percussive electronic music genres made largely for nightclubs, raves, and festivals. It is generally produced for playback by disc jockeys who create seamless selections of tracks, called a mix by segueing from one recording to another. EDM producers also perform their music live in a concert or festival setting in what is sometimes called a live PA. In Europe, EDM is more commonly called ‘dance music’, or simply ‘dance’.
In the United States at that time, acceptance of dance culture was not universal. There was also a perceived association between EDM and drug culture which led governments at state and city level to enact laws and policies intended to halt the spread of rave culture.
