I don’t consider myself a big electronic rock fan, but I have a few songs in my playlists that can fit into this category. Electronic rock is defined as rock music that contains electronic instruments such as drum machines, synthesizers or sequencers. From the sounds of it, one might think the genre is pretty new and fresh, but it’s actually been around since the 1970s! I’ve picked some of my favorites to share with you here.

This band is an English electronic act which was formed in 1990 by Liam Howlett. It consists of him, Keith Flint and Maxim Reality. Their debut album was “Experience” which was released in 1992, followed by 1994’s “Music for the Jilted Generation”. In 1997 they came out with another album, “The Fat of The Land”, which has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide since then. They are also famous for their live performances. Their latest album is 2004’s “Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned”.

Electronic rock bands usually use synthesizers to produce their music, but they still use guitars, drums, bass guitars and other traditional instruments.

The most common instruments are the synthesizer, sampler, drum machine and guitar.

Because the genre is a mix of two different genres, there are different ways how bands can approach it. Some bands just use electronics to support their rock songs, while other bands make the electronics the focus point in their songs. There are also many bands that combine both approaches.

I’ve been listening to electronic rock music for a few years now, and I must say it’s some of the coolest stuff I’ve ever heard. Electronic rock is music that is mostly or completely composed electronically, but has vocals or other elements of traditional rock (like guitar) added in.

It’s hard to say where electronic rock began, but my guess would be with Kraftwerk. They were definitely one of the first bands to use synth and vocoder as prominent elements in their songs. Their influence is all over modern electronic rock, even though they aren’t a “rock” band per se.

The next major influence, at least for me personally, was the Prodigy. That’s right; those guys. When I first heard “Smack My Bitch Up” by them in 1997, I was hooked on electronic music forever. It’s still one of my favorite songs ever recorded.

Anyway…here are eight bands that have been really influential (in my opinion) in the history of electronic rock music.

I did my research for this around the web and came up with a list of bands that have had a big influence on electronic rock music. I must admit that when I started this blog my knowledge of electronic rock was limited to the odd gig here and there. But after doing some research, I can say that electronic rock bands are becoming more popular and there is a lot more to it than just pop music.

1. Crystal Castles

Crystal Castles are an experimental electronic band which formed in 2004 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and consists of producer Ethan Kath and vocalist Alice Glass. They are named after the lyrics “The fate of the world is safe in Crystal Castles” and “Crystal Castles, the source of all power” both from the theme song for She-Ra’s fortress. Glass has stated that her persona as Crystal Castles is from She-Ra: Princess of Power.

Their debut album was released in 2008 to positive reviews which earned them a cult following in the underground music community. Their second album, ‘II’ was released in 2010 to critical acclaim and earned them their first worldwide mainstream exposure. To date they have sold around 1 million albums worldwide.
