Different chords have different functions. A major chord sounds happy, while a minor chord sounds sad. A diminished chord sounds mysterious and tense, while a dominant seventh chord sounds like suspense.

I suggest using a chord function chart to decide what chords work best for your track.

The most important thing in electronic music is sound design. No matter how good your arrangement is, how interesting your chord progression sounds, if the sounds you use are not interesting and unique then you will get nowhere. And one of the most important aspects of sound design is mixing.

As a DJ, I’ve been mixing electronic music for over 20 years. One thing I’ve learned is that you can’t just throw a bunch of tracks together and expect them to sound good. You have to be intentional about the process. That’s why I created this blog: to teach you the tips and tricks that will help your mixes stand out from the crowd.

Tip

1. Side-chaining is a great way to make space and movement in your track. Side-chaining is a technique where one track’s signal is used to trigger a dynamic processor on another track, reducing the volume of the second track (usually a pad or synth) when the first track’s signal is loud. A common example would be using a kick drum to trigger side-chain compression on a pad so that the pad dips slightly in volume whenever there is a kick hit.

2. If you want to give your track more of an ‘analogue’ feel, try adding some subtle distortion by clipping off parts of your waveform with a limiter and then applying some low pass filtering to take off anything above 3kHz. This can make your sounds sit nicely in the mix and also help them gel together more cohesively, but be careful not to add too much distortion as it can easily sound muddy if overused!

3. If you’re trying to get a nice vocal sound in your track, then try using two compressors in series: one before any effects processing like reverb or delay, with just enough gain reduction so that there aren’t any big peaks; and then another after any effects
