A common mistake that people make when recording their own vocals is not getting proper gain staging. This is when you are setting the right levels before your signal hits the converter (the preamp).
The key to gain staging is to make sure that you are not overdriving your preamps. You want to make sure that your signal is hitting the preamp without going into the red light. If it’s too low, you want to increase your gain until you get some good level without clipping (going into the red).
